Most people know that Zeta Beta Tau recently celebrated our 100 year anniversary in 1998. The Alpha Zeta chapter at University of Florida, however, recently celebrated it's 80th anniversary in 2001, from our founding in 1921.
Zeta Beta Tau is now in its fourth stage of existence at the University of Florida. The first version of ZBT at UF was in the form of the Maccabean Society which existed from 1919-1921. In 1921, the Maccabean Society changed and became the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Beta Tau. Our fraternity then became the 7th fraternity at the University of Florida. (Fraternities pre-dating ZBT at UF were Alpha Tau Omega - 1884, Sigma Alpha Epsilon - 1884, Kappa Alpha - 1904, Pi Kappa Alpha - 1904, Theta Chi - 1916, and Sigma Nu - 1920). The Alpha Zeta Chapter was short lived, however, and only existed until 1923.

The first ZBT Composite Photographs from 1922. The brothers at the time were: Jacob Bohrer, Joseph W. Friedman, Murray C. Cohen, Milton E. Robbins, Moses Rosenhouse, William J. Yarnoff. The pledges were: Stephen E. Klein, Max Glickstein, and Saul J. Lowenkoph.
After a 23 year hiatus, ZBT re-emerged as the Delta Sigma Colony from 1946-1948. ZBT, on November 13, 1948, was changed and officially installed as the Alpha Zeta Chapter once again.

In 1959, Phi Alpha merged into Phi Sigma Delta, and in 1961 Kappa Nu merged into Phi Epsilon Pi. In 1969-70, Phi Sigma Delta and Phi Epsilon Pi merged into Zeta Beta Tau.
From 1960-1969, there was a chapter of Phi Epsilon Pi at UF that merged with ZBT, but eventually folded.
In 1979, a group of men reformed ZBT as the Beta Tau Colony. Brother Craig Zimmet was the founding president of the group. Then in 1981, ZBT once again had the designation of the Alpha Zeta Chapter and existed on campus until it folded in 1989.
In 1994, men on the UF campus brought back ZBT for the fourth time. After some very difficult and uncertain times, a dedicated group of founding fathers made a commitment to make ZBT work. The original 16 founding fathers were: Jon Bratter, Craig Cohen, Aaron Deutsch, Jason Goldstein, Josh Gordon, Tony Hernandez, Robert Seth Malkin, Jordan Mautner, Jeffrey Miles Jr., Scott Nortman, Ari Reingowski, Jason Sain, Jesse Tortora, Evan Weiss, Jason Weiss, and Toby Young. With a great deal of help from Martin Halpern, a ZBT alumnus, in the fall of 1996, the brothers acquired the house at 921 SW Depot Avenue.

His determined group, joined by more dedicated men, led the chapter to receiving its Charter under then president Hunter Biederman, in the Spring of 1999.
In May 2003, Alpha Zeta relinquished its founding house that it resided at since 1996 and moved to Fraternity Row on UF's campus. Alpha Zeta held its first recruitment at 1 Fraternity Row in August 2003. This transition was very valuable for ZBT as it provided greater exposure, which was not provided by the initial house.

Alpha Zeta returned the house at 1 Fraternity Row in June of 2007 to Chi Phi. We moved to a larger and overall better house off of University. The New House, known as the Paradigm house, contains 38 rooms spread out over 3-stories. The recreation rooms downstairs makes the house ideal for functions and events. Its location also makes it a prime residence, being right in the middle of midtown and downtown.

We are a powerhouse of excellence in terms of athletics, academics, and brotherhood and we will continue to build on this foundation as we will with our new home.
The Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Beta Tau, in 2009, returned to Fraternity Row. The AZ chapter of ZBT currently resides on 11 Fraternity Row in between the Beta and Theta Chi houses. The new house holds more than 40 brothers and has two floors full of rooms and recreational areas.
